Math Olympiads

Students in grades four through six are invited to join Mathematical Olympiads!  This program allows children to engage in creative problem solving activities, which develop the ability to reason, to be logical, and to be resourceful.

The Olympiad goals for the children are to:

         1.  Develop enthusiasm for problem solving and mathematics

         2.  Deepen understanding of mathematical concepts

         3.  Consider concepts that they might not otherwise encounter

         4.  Enrich experiences in intellectually stimulating mental activities

Interested children will practice once a week, beginning promptly at 7:45 on Thursday mornings, beginning Thursday, November 13th

We will not have practice sessions in the event of a delayed opening of school.

Grade levels meet in different locations:

         Grade 4                           Mrs. Lombard’s classroom

Grade 5 and Grade 6         Mrs. VanderMale’s classroom

Although this program is challenging, learning how to understand and solve problems is the most important goal of mathematics education.  The weekly practices are, therefore, the most important part of this program.  State contests, given periodically, consist of five questions to challenge students’ independent thinking.

We look forward to working with your child.  Please send this permission slip in to your child’s homeroom before our first practice.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of us at 767-8215.
  Thank you,

                                                         Shannon VanderMale

                                                         Lynn Lombard
