The work of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction focuses
on research, planning, designing curriculum, developing and implementing programs to enhance teaching and learning, and evaluating programs to determine their effectiveness. With the Connecticut Academic and Performance Test (CAPT) for high school students and the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) for elementary and middle school students, we continue to focus on aligning curriculum to the national and state standards.
The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction also coordinates the district professional development program, oversees the district testing/evaluation program, participates in hiring personnel for our schools, supports the development of instructional budgets and performs any additional duties as determined by the Superintendent of Schools.
The Board of Education is responsible for establishing the educational goals for the schools of Chester, Deep River, Essex and Region 4, for adopting measurable student learning objectives for each curriculum, for determining the assessments by which progress toward these goals will be measured, for approving textbooks, and for approving all course additions or deletions. In accordance with Connecticut General Statute 10220, this is a collaborative process, involving input from teachers, administrators, parents, community members, and students, as appropriate.
